Topics of Study
Elements of Fiction/Short Stories: We'll review and expand your understanding of plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, and symbols.
To Kill a Mockingbird: You'll read, study, and discuss what was named "The Book of the 20th Century" along with its themes of compassion, understanding, respect, and courage.
Poetry: You'll review major poetic elements, write a few poems of your own, and analyze the poetry of famous poets.
Hero's Journey: We'll study this formula of literature, film, and life to ultimately learn how we are each a hero.
The Odyssey: We'll use Homer's Odyssey as a springboard for discussing literary, legendary, and ordinary heroes.
Elements of Drama/Romeo and Juliet: This is Shakespeare's classic tale of teenagers and tragedy. Yes, it's old and the English will be difficult at first, but we have fun with it, and you'll love it—and its conflicts—in the end.
In addition, independent reading, grammar, writing, viewing, thinking, and speaking will be a part of every unit
